The Truth About Lisa Jewell review — a superfan gets inside her head – The Times

Andy Martin’s Reacher Said Nothing from 2015 was a compelling, blow-by-blow, over-the-shoulder account of the composition of Lee Child’s latest thriller. Will Brooker tries to pull off the same trick here with Lisa Jewell.

He isn’t sitting right behind her, as Martin did with Child, but reads chapters as they come and interviews her repeatedly. They go for drinks at the Groucho Club. He even starts giving her plot advice.

It should be fascinating. Jewell is the writer of 19 bestsellers, from Ralph’s Party, her “chick-lit” debut of 1999, to thrillers such as the half-million-selling The Family Upstairs and The Family Remains — the sequel that Brooker is watching her write. (It is published at the same time as his own book.)
